FEES Studies

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow (FEES)

Patheous Health

The fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing study is a well-established technique that involves passing a flexible endoscope through the patient’s nasal passage to provide a superior view of the pharynx so the larynx, pharynx, and upper esophageal opening are viewed directly from above.

The goal of the FEES study is to

  •  visualize surface mucosa and secretions;
  • assess vocal fold dynamics or the laryngeal adductor reflex related to swallow function;
  • assess suspected or observed difficulty with swallowing saliva/oral secretions

Patheous Health Approach

Our trained and certified FEES clinician provides the onsite imaging study at your facility, using gold-standard fiberoptic endoscopic system at the patient bedside.  Our patient-centric focused FEES clinician is a speech-language pathologist (SLP) that will start by completing a thorough chart review, clinical swallow assessment, and patient interview.  During our FEES exam, patients are kept comfortable in a seated position while our SLP evaluate the patient’s swallow function during the 30-minute exam.
